The Differences Between Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus

Almost all computer users are familiar with the many irritations that are associated and caused by adware, spyware and computer viruses. To better understand what they are, we should distinguish between them one at a time.

Spyware is first on our list to discuss. By design, spyware software or programs are not intended to harm your computer. It will work to create doorways in your system to transfer information to and from your computer to another system. Spywares will work to record the many different types of web sites you visit, which are then later used by web advertisers to know what kind of unsolicited emails and pop-ups to send to your computer.

This is the reason spyware upsets most users and the reason they try to completely avoid it from coming up. In addition, spyware is a good deal more invasive than adware. Spyware also has their own separate executable programs which may allow them to record your keystrokes, scan files on your hard disks and look at other applications that you use, including but not limited to, chat programs, cookies and Web browser settings.

The information gathered from the spyware will then be sent to the spyware author. After the spyware completes it’s job then it alerts the author that sent it so they can begin to send marketing advertisements to that computer. They even sell the information to advertisers and other parties.

Now let’s take a look at adware. Adware is a more legitimate and acceptable type of freeware. Both spyware and adware’s are made up of advertising materials which are packaged into a software or program in order to be installed automatically once that particular program is downloaded to your computer. There are some forms of adware, on the other hand, that download advertising contents as a particular application is being utilized. Unfortunately, another thing adware has in common with spyware is, they both are used to sell the information they gather to outside advertisers.

One of the ways to tell if spyware infections have invaded your system, would be by getting any pop-up ads that are not related to the site you are viewing. Many of these spyware pop-ups are entry ways to porn site and highly offensive spyware, which is the main reason for it’s most unpopular reputation. Another thing to watch out for, is if your computer begins to slow down and perform in an unusual way, it could mean spyware has found it’s way into your system. If your Windows desktop begins to take a long time to load you may have a spyware infection and should check for any infections in your system.

Finally we need to discuss computer Viruses, all of which are a destructive form of software. They were solely designed and created for one purpose and that is to work havoc in your computer. They destroy whatever they were written to destroy, may also initiate self-replication and infect as many components of the computer’s operating system or network as possible.

Fortunately, you can buy anti-virus software that will also work to remove any spyware and adware you may have in your system. Some programs, however, are specifically focused on locating and deleting or destroying spyware and adware programs. Whether it is anti-virus or anti-spyware software dedicated scanner, they both search your computer and identify any spyware or virus installed on your system.

After they locate it, not only will they remove it, they will rid your system of any other intrusive components found within your computer. There are literally thousands of spyware programs and viruses on the internet and some in the shared media, therefore it is vital that you consistently make it a habit to update your anti-virus scanning software on a regular basis. Never be fooled from ads that claim that their products only contains adware.

These adware programs may be spyware in disguise and are just waiting to be deployed to gather your information. By learning to use your Internet Explorer pop-up blockers and set up some type of hardware or software firewall to protect your system data files, you will be on the road to keeping your system safer from harms way.
